More Maybelline chat 🙂 I reviewed the new colours of the Eraser Eye Concealers here. Now, I am chatting and applying some of the new products out for Summer 2017!
Maybelline, as a brand for me can be very much hit or miss. I am not always a fan of the releases, so some of the products end up in bags for friends or for charity. Obviously, if I hate something enough I will tell you why and if I love it I will shout it from the rooftops too! But if something is just ‘meh’, it doesn’t always get a second look.
I have some of the new Maybelline Summer releases and I thought I would put them altogether and do a makeup look with the goodies I own. Some are PR samples, some I bought myself. Nothing majorly fancy or groundbreaking. But, it just means you get to see some of them in action on my chubby little face , and I get to give initial impressions 🙂
I will list everything I used below, in case anything particular takes your fancy and you want to investigate it further:
I have already linked the new Eraser Eyes in Neutralizer and Brightener above.
Master Blush Color & Highlight Kit. Available on the Boots website here.
Master Ink Waterproof Liquid Liner. Available here.
I did use some other Maybelline and non Maybelline products just because I had them and I didn’t have a whole face of newness in my stash. As always, you can click the video above to watch and go directly to my YouTube channel here to check it out.
I think my stand out favourites are the loose powder and the concealers. The Colossal mascara is pretty damn good too though!

I am panicking a bit, not going to lie. We are properly into the second month of 2017, eeeekk! But in blog/vlog world that gives us an excuse to recap and look over the month and pick out some of our most used bits and bobs. I do this in video form now, but I do like to still do a blog post too.
My January Favourites for 2017 consist of a couple of fashion bits, a skincare item and of course my one true love, some makeup as well.
I have a bit of disclaimer, I filmed this feeling a little bit under the weather. I have the cold that so many people have at the minute that just won’t go away. So it’s a bit of rambley video, hope that’s OK ha. I am a bit zonked on cold medication 🙂
The products mentioned are:
A Zara bag pack, that is gone from the website now, I apologise if you liked the look of it.
Coverse Hi Top runners. You can get these in so many places, but I’ll put a link to them on the Schuh website here if you want a closer look.
Asos watch: I can’t find a to the exact one, but they have lots of similar (and actually some nicer ones) here.
Cailyn Dissolv’It Makeup Melt Cleansing Balm. I got given this at an event, but it retails for €25 from their website here.
Isa Dora Matt Fixing Powder. I got this as a press sample. But, I found it on the Feel Unique website here for €17.86.
Zoeva Blanc Fusion Palette. I have a review and info on all of the palettes within the Plaisir Box here.
Rimmel Exaggerate Lip Liners. You can pick these up in Boots in store or online here. They are €5.49
And then finally Mac Extended Play Mascara. I have a whole blog post about this here.
And that is all of my January Favourites. You can watch the video by clicking on it above or going to my YouTube channel here. Have you any stand out products from the month?
I am always on the lookout for brilliant budget beauty buys. (yes I love that all of the words begin with b, not gonna lie :)) Rather than do monthly faves, I think I might do posts like this so often for budget and non budget beauty. Let me know what you think?
First up in my budget beauty list is:
My very beloved Rimmel Lasting Finish Nude Foundation.
I won’t bore you with the details. I waffle about this foundation all the time and have a full review here. This stuff just does it for me. I love the finish, the longevity, it wears really well on my oily skin and the coverage. It will set you back €9.99 in Boots so at a smidgen under a tenner, not a bad price point at all.
Next up on budget friendly rambles are these Catrice Liquid Metal Eyeshadows.
I think Catrice have nine colours to choose from in the Liquid Metal range. I have three of them and they get alot of use from me.
090 Nougat it right
070 Gold leaf me
100 What do you see?
These little pots are really pigmented, go on without any fuss and when dampened pack even more punch. I love shadows like this because you can create a really cool eye look without any effort. Not sure of the exact price on the Liquid Metal Shadows but I know they cost less than 4 euro a piece.
Another Catrice fave in my budget beauty stash is their Liquid Camouflage concealer.
I go into more detail and demo this here. It’s such a fab purse friendly full coverage concealer that works well under the eyes and around the face. A must have in your makeup drawer in my opinion, and with it being €3.99, I don’t feel guilty saying that 🙂
These Penneys lashes need no introduction, they have taken on a life of their own in the beauty world it seems.
They are so handy to have around when you are looking to add a little something more to a look. They would be described as individual lashes, unlike other individual lashes they have three clusters on one band, which for me takes way less faffing about.
You can add just one of these to your outer lashes and be good to go. And the best part it? They cost €1.50! You wouldn’t even get a coffee for that nowadays (in Dublin at least) and you get glue included for that price too. Score!
The Maybelline Lash Sensational Waterproof mascara is a rediscovery for me.
I got it a while back and loved it, even gave it a full review here. Then, I started having a thing with the Catrice Glam & Doll mascara (full review here) and I forgot about it for a while. I pulled it out the other week more to see if it was time to bin it or not and gave it one last whirl. I swear it’s an even better mascara now after drying out in the drawer for a couple of months! Might buy another one and just leave it in the dark for a while 🙂 I picked this up in Boots for €11.99. Not the cheapest mascara in the world, but still a decent price I reckon, and they’re always doing offers on it.
I have been loving this Essence No Makeup Look Nail Polish in Powdery Nude so much of late.
If you just be couldn’t be bothered doing your nails, but want them to look decent, this is such a great little find. I put a base coat on, add two layers of this and I’m done.
It dries really quickly and has a cool powdery finish to it so adding a top coat would take away from that. And it lasts really well on the nails. I can get around four days out of it before it starts to move, that’s not bad at all. I picked this up in Penneys and it cost me less than €3.
I have an oldie but a goodie next. The Sleek Face Form Contouring And Blush Palette.
I brought this to Oslo with me and it’s made me fall in love with it all over again. This is the light version of the palette and you get a contour shade, a highlighter and a blush, all for €9.99.
Not a bad deal whatsoever. Sleek is such a great brand! The shades double up as eyeshadows as well which is great for travelling.
This Flormar Bronzing Powder is huge and this is one of the reasons what I love it. It will last you a life time.
It’s also a really nice soft bronzer though. It has a really faint glitter running through it, but it doesn’t translate too much when on the skin.
The fact it’s so big means you can use a huge brush to apply it so it’s quick, easy and great for bronzing up the body too. A firm budget beauty fave in my collection. You can actually buy Flormar online here from Simplyfoxy. It will set you back €9.99.
My last favourite of the minute is Botanics Soothing Eye Makeup Remover.
I am a waterproof mascara junkie, and this does a fab job of removing every scrap of it without irritating or dragging my eyes. It’s an oil in water solution, so you just have to give it a good shake before you use it to ensure the liquid is fully mixed. I apply it with a couple of cotton rounds, leave them on each eye for a couple of seconds and then wipe. It even remove Inglot Gel liner and doesn’t leave you with panda eyes the next morning. That’s impressive! At full price this will set you back €5.99 from Boots, it’s always on special though so just keep a look out. I am a huge fan of the Botanics range, they do some brilliant skincare and haircare products, that are really reasonably priced.
There you have it, a run through of some of my budget beauty favourites of the moment. What’s your favourite purse friendly product? I’d love to know 🙂
Lash application is one of those things that just comes to you after practice, I think. I was crap at it when I first gave it a go, but I’ve done it so much over the years now that I don’t even think about it.
If you’re new to the lash game, something like this kit from Kiss is a really handy place to start.
Kiss do all different styles of lash in these Haute Couture lash kits. This is the wink style, which give more volume and length to the centre and outer lashes.
They all come with a handy lash application tool and some Aloe Vera Adhesive, which is meant to be more gentle so good if you have sensitive eyes.
When I use lashes for the first time, I like to bend the band on them a little. So, to do this I just twist the seam of the lash between my fingers and then basically form it around my finger.
Doing this makes the band (especially a thicker bank) a more of a rounder shape, so it will fit to your eye better and make lash application easier.
Then, I grab my lash glue.
This Kiss one is actually really handy because if has a little applicator on it, so you can easily apply it to the lash. The key to application is only apply a thin layer of glue to the band of the lash, then give it 20 or so seconds to become tacky. If the glue isn’t tacky, the lash will slide around your eyelid and things just start to get messy.
The more you apply lashes, the more you’ll know what tool is best to use for you for applying the lash onto your natural lashes. For me, I’m more comfortable placing it down first with my hand.
Drop the lash into the centre of your eye as much as you can. It means you have a couple of second to adjust if the lash isn’t where it should be.
Then, I grab my tool or tweezers, and tuck in the edges 🙂
You can use it to squeeze the fake lash into your real lashes aswell, so you don’t have any gaps showing and they are as close to your natural lash line as you can possibly get them.
The Kiss Wink lashes don’t go right into the inner corner of my eyes. I personally like this because it means if there is any lifting throughout the day or night, I won’t be getting poked in the eye ball. We’ve all experienced that right? It bloody hurts! A good tip is to actually measure your false lash to your eye before you apply it and trim any excess.
The Wink lashes don’t have an invisible band though, so to make them look more flush with my lash line, I use a liquid liner to just continue the line across my lash line.
So there’s one eye finished. Definitely makes a difference, right?
Then I just recreate what I did on the other eye as best I can. Don’t give yourself a hard time if the falsies aren’t completely symmetrical, your eyes aren’t completely symmetrical!
I finish off by adding another slick of mascara to my top lashes, to just make sure falsies and naturals are all married together and looking the best they can.
Lashes like these Kiss ones can be used more than once if you’re careful taking them off, so get your monies worth ladies. You can remove any excess glue with a tweezers and put them back into their handy little case.
There you have it, my top tips for lash application. Hope they helped 🙂
The Kiss Haute Couture Lash Sets are available from Dunnes and some selected pharmacies and they cost €21.99.

I am having a mascara love affair. It doesn’t happen very often, it has been very short lived, but it’s a love affair nonetheless 🙂 You might think I’m crazy, but I have a bit of a pained relationship with mascara. Getting one that holds a curl, that is lengthening, doesn’t smudge or flake and adds volume is no mean feat!
Well I can safely say after putting the Maybelline Lash Sensational (in waterproof) to the test, it ticks all the boxes for me.
I think when it comes to mascara, you know within a few times of wearing, sometimes even one wear, that it’s the one for you. I have been wearing the Maybelline Lash Sensational everyday for the last two weeks. Not a long time but I think it’s enough time in mascara world to give an honest opinion.
And also the proof is in the pudding too right?
I have pretty minuscule, straight lashes, as you can see here.
I harp on about this all the time, but I am a big fan of the eyelash curler, I use it everyday without fail, unless I’m wearing falsies. It just opens my eyes up more and obviously…well curls my lashes 🙂
So here are my lashes curled with the Shu Uemura eyelash curler.
And then we get onto the fun part, and actually one of my favourite parts of applying makeup. I think your lashes can make or break a look. I personally like as much lash as I can possibly get even during the day, but specifically length, so I lash on the mascara (ha get it lash on!) Ok, enough jokes, here’s the Maybelline Lash Sensational applied to my lashes.
I love how separating and lengthening this mascara is. I had tried the non waterproof one previously and it was a lovely mascara, it just didn’t hold the curl for me. This one does, and it’s really black and it gives a good amount of volume and it doesn’t clump and it doesn’t end up halfway down my face at the end of the day.
I also really like the curved wand, I wasn’t sure I would to begin with but I think you get the best of both worlds from it. You can always turn the spooley and use the straighter side, if you prefer. It has different sized bristles aswell, which seems to work really well for coating the lashes without clumping up too much. I have to admit though, I like a little bit of clumping, so I do layer a fair amount of mascara on. Is that bad? it’s only personal preference anyways sure :).
Although the Maybelline Lash Sensational has a wet formula, which I am not always a fan of, because I think it can weigh lashes down, I don’t think this happens with the Lash Sensational at all, the formula just seems to work!
So there you have it, Maybelline Lash Sensational in waterproof, it’s a yes from me 🙂 I picked mine up from Boots and it costs €11.99.
Thanks for reading, and let me know your favourite mascara, I am always on the hunt 🙂
Sometimes I forget that most people aren’t as obsessed with makeup and beauty products as much as me.I assume that everyone knows all the little tips and tricks that I’ve picked up along the way being a self confessed beauty addict.
This is not always the case, so I’ve set up a new little section to Beautynook called Beautynook Tips (unique name I know 🙂 I just want to keep it simple. Some of it may be common knowledge, some of it may not be, let’s just see where the wind takes us 🙂
So my first Beautynook Tip is going to be How To Keep Your Eyelashes Curled All Day.
I myself have pretty straight boring lashes, nothing to brag about or be proud of, so on a day to day basis I always put a little extra effort in to make them look a bit more full and curled.
Here are my lashes with no product on them:
Pretty bog standard right?
First up I like to give my lashes a really good curl.
I have used so many different types of lash curlers over the years. Some cheap, some not so cheap and my favourite by far have to be the Shu Uemura ones.
Not the most affordable, they will set you back around 20 euro, but whatever way they are shaped they just do a really good job at getting into the base of the lashes and doing the job well. When curling your lashes try to get as close to the base as possible (without hurting yourself of course). When you have all your lashes in the curlers, tilt it upwards slightly to help with the curling. Give the curlers a good few squeezes while you have them clamped on your lashes and hold them in place for a good 20 seconds or so to get the full benefit.
If you find your lashes won’t take a curl particularly well, try heating you lash curlers gently with a hair dryer. Give them a blast for about 5-10 seconds, you don’t want to get them too hot, but if they are heated slightly that will help with the process.
So eyelashes curled…check.
You can see that makes a huge difference already right?
Personally for me, most of the time, I find normal mascaras don’t cut the mustard when it comes to holding the curl in place all day long. This is a personal preference but I tend to go for waterproof formulas. I think as a general rule they hold a curl better and they don’t transfer onto my oily skin. At the minute I am using the Maybelline The Rocket Volum’ Express Waterproof, and I really like it.
I am not too particular about mascaras. If it does the job well, I will use any brand or price point. I am always on the look out for recommendations though so if you have one that you love be sure to let me know 🙂
When it comes to applying mascara I have found that applying from the base of your lashes, and wiggling the wand up to the tip is the best way to apply it. Use the bristles at the end of the wand to get into your outer lashes and fan them out for a more voluminous look. It applies product to every lash while helping to lift them into place before the mascara sets. I know waterproof mascara is more difficult to get off, but if you have trouble keeping a curl in your lashes, give it a go and I promise it will help. Just use an oil when cleaning and it will come off without too much trouble.
So mascara is added to the top lashes.
Ok this step might be a bit over the top. I use a different mascara for my bottom lashes. I know I know how high maintenance of me 🙂
I use the Mac Extended Play Lash mascara on my bottom lashes exclusively for a couple of reasons.
One it doesn’t budge and my bottom lashes notoriously smudge. I don’t find it very beneficial for my top lashes it’s not volume enhancing enough for me.
Also the wand it small and dinky.
You can get in to separate and coat all your little bottom lash hairs easier than with a big giant spooley like the one on the Maybelline mascara. I love having mascara on my bottom lashes I feel it opens your eyes and make you look more awake.
Bottom lashes done.
So lashes are done, but we can do one more step to make our lashes look a little fuller. Tight lining your upper water line really helps darken up your lash line and make your lashes look more voluminous. It’s not hugely noticeable here but I promise it helps. I will be honest and say it doesn’t feel very pleasant when you do it, but after a while you get used to it 🙂 Of course use a waterproof formula eye kohl or gel as you want it to stay put for as long as possible.
I tend to tight line my bottom water line too most days, I personally just feel I look a bit better with it done, so I’ll show you the finished look below.
There you have it, my first installment of Beautynook Tips. It seems like a lot of steps but I reckon I can knock this out in about 5 minutes now and once the mascara is on, it doesn’t budge until you take it off. These are tried and tested products.
If you have any tips or tricks you want to share be sure to add them in the comments below. If you have anything else you would like me to cover, let me know too.
Thanks for reading as always and have a great day 🙂
