I am very hesitant to call this a hair curling tutorial. I’m forever hesitant to use that word anywhere on Beautynook to be honest. But, it’s what people search for, so I’m just jumping on the bandwagon. Don’t think any less of me πŸ™‚

Myself and hair styling would not be the best of friends. I’m lucky in that my hair isn’t too unruly so I can get away with doing the bare minimum with it most of the time. There is really only two facets to my ability. Straightening, which I use the L’OrΓ©al Steampod for. (Review here). Or, I can curl it, which I’m doing a lot of lately.

irish beauty blog

At first when I was asked a few times by you lovely lot on Snapchat and Instagram how I curl my hair, I kind of got embarrassed. I just think of myself as so shit at hair. I decided to give a ‘hair curling tutorial’ a go anyways though and as I got into it, I realised, maybe I do have a couple of tips that people might learn from. We all do these things differently, right?

hair curling tutorial

I generally curl my hair when it’s freshly clean. I know most people don’t do that, but I have oily roots and if I did it on second or third day hair, it just wouldn’t be worth my while. I’ll use heat protection spray before drying and then just blast dry it. I used the fancy Dyson hairdryer in this video because we’re house sitting. Sad to say, I definitely don’t have one of these at home πŸ™

I’ll link the vent brush here too that I use in case you like the look of it πŸ™‚ I let my hair cool and let my really old but favourite Babyliss curling wand heat up. I like less uniformed waves rather than full on curls. That’s of course personal preference though.

irish beauty blog

I do one side of my head at a time, taking approximately one inch sections. I like the tousled look, so I don’t think too much about it, once all the hair has a bit of a wave I’m happy. Click on the video above or directly here to see the whole Hair Curling Tutorial in action. You’ll get a better sense at how crap I am at hair and of the finished result πŸ™‚

Soap & Glory The Rushower Dry Shampoo

Myself and dry shampoo have a really close relationship, yep you read that right. I panic if I don’t have one stashed in a drawer ready for use. I have oily skin, which means I have oily roots. Generally, the second day after washing my gruaig, I will need a spritz. I am always a bit reluctant to talk about hair stuff too in-depth. I am not great with hair. I know how to wash, dry and use a hair straighteners or a curling wand on it. That is the extent of my hair abilities. But I guess when it comes to hair care, I know what I like and what works for me, so I am allowed dabble in it, right? πŸ™‚ I picked up the new Soap & Glory The Rushower Dry Shampoo for one reason. Purely because it had the familiar scent the brand are known for.

Soap & Glory The Rushower Dry Shampoo

They call it their Signature Pink scent which consists of Rose and Bergamot. I am a big fan of it. I love the kitsch packaging too.

I have to admit I am not majorly fussy when it comes to dry shampoo. I just want one that smells good, sprays evenly and doesn’t leave my hair feeling like I was rolling around in the sand all day. Ok, maybe I am a little bit fussy… I can say that the Soap & Glory The Rushower Dry Shampoo ticks all of them boxes for me.

irish beauty blogger

It smells really good (in my opinion). It sprays really finely on the hair, so it doesn’t make your fingers or hairbrush sticky as you disperse it through the roots. It does a great job at mopping up any unwanted oiliness in the roots of the hair and gives it a bit of a lift at the same time. It also doesn’t leave a white cast on your hair, once you don’t spray it too close and give everything a good rub in!

One downside of the Soap & Glory The Rushower Dry Shampoo. It only comes in a 200ml can. And you can go through it mighty quickly! The mist is fine, so you do tend to go a bit nuts using it.

Overall though, I am a fan! I will definitely repurchase. The Soap & Glory The Rushower Dry Shampoo is available in store and online here from Boots now for €3.89.

I’ve had the Rimmel Brow Shake Filling Powder in my possession a while now. Actually, I’ve been calling it the Brow This Way Soft Powder, which is what is written on the packaging. But, after googling it to find a Boots link, I couldn’t find anything by that name.

Rimmel Brow Shake Filling Powder

Turns out they call it the Rimmel Brow Shake Filling Powder everywhere! Anyhow, I digress πŸ™‚ This is a new (ish) brow powder from Rimmel.

Rimmel Brown Shake

It comes in a little bottle, with it’s own applicator inside. I picked up the shade 002 Medium Brown, which is a pretty ok match for my brows. It does come in four shades though ranging from black to blonde.

It reminds me very much of a powder eye liner. It has the same type of flat, but rounded applicator on the lid.

The premise is you shake up the powder product onto the applicator while the packaging is still closed and then it is loaded up to fill your brows in with.

It has a shaker ball within the lid, which I find a bit odd. If it was going to help keep the powder separated, surely it should be in the container itself? Perhaps I have the complete wrong end of the stick about how it works and if I do, I apologise πŸ™‚

The powder itself packs alot of punch which is great. The medium shade has a greyish undertone too which I always like as well. It seems to adhere to the skin well and lasts too.

For me, I find the packaging and the applicator or the Rimmel Brow Shake doesn’t really work. If you have fabulous full brows (like Cara in the promo ads), I think this would work quite well for you. You can just fill in any gaps lightly really quickly with it and comb through to take away any excess with a spooley and, you’d be good to go. For my struggling brows, the sponge applicator is just too big and rounded. It picks up and applies too much product. I need more precision and have more control over my application.

I find the sponge can drop alot of the powder too on the way from the bottle to your face, which can be a tad messy.

It works ok on my ‘better brow’, which I am showing here. On my right brow, it’s a bit of a disaster!

Overall, I like the powder within. Just for me, the packaging and execution doesn’t really work. You can find the Rimmel Brow Shake Filling Powder in Boots in store on online for €7.99 here. Have you tried it?

My eyebrow routine changes from time to time. It depends on how my actual eyebrows are behaving and whether I went crazy with the tweezers. It also depends on what brow products are working for me too.

My Brow Routine

I have a bit of a funny relationship with my tweezers. I can get completely carried away with them and pluck away hairs I should have never have touched. It also took me a long time to figure out that getting rid of a few hairs at the base of my brows on the inside would work wonders for the shape. And then, of course I did the thing that a lot of people do, plucked the hell of out of the front part of my brows! They were ridiculous for so long, but sure look they are only brows at the end of the day πŸ™‚ I do have brows, the hair on them is quite long and wiry though. And because I plucked them so much in the past, some patches just won’t grow back. If I am just popping to the shops or heading to the gym, I’ll just fill in the tail of them a little with a pencil and be good to go. But if I am doing makeup, this is my brow routine at the moment.

I am still trying to grow them somewhat and they are definitely far from perfect, but I am at a stage now where I don’t completely hate my brows. On makeup wearing days, I use three products to fill them in and keep them in place.

irish beauty blogger

The NYX Micro Brow Pencil which I love and have a full review of here. The shade I use is ‘Ash Brown’. My hair has an auburn tinge to it and so do my brows, so I feel the more ashy brown shade makes them a bit more neutral.

The Freedom Duo Brow Powder is another product I spoke more about in a previous post here. I have this in the shade ‘Soft Brown’. I usually use the darker shade on the tail of my brows and the lighter shade through the rest.

What I use to set my brows is a pretty new product to me. The Too Faced Brow Quickie. This is in the shade ‘Universal Brunette’ This contains fibres so it works well for bulking up the brows, adds some colour and fixes them in place. It is also waterproof. I am still testing it out so don’t have a definitive opinion on it yet. It is available on the Debenhams website here.

I am in disbelief that it is in fact August. But, the calendar on my phone has told me it is, and I must obey the mighty iPhone. This means that it’s time to look back over the last month and pick out some of the things I have been using and loving throughout it. Here are my July Favourites for 2016 πŸ™‚

irish beauty blogger

They are all beauty related for July, there’s no curve balls πŸ™‚

July Favourites

Initially I had the L’Oreal Nude Magique Cushion Foundation included too (which I have a full review of here). Something happened with the footage though and I lost it, so apologies for that! But I have been loving it. It gives you high spf, light but build-able coverage and feels really nice on the skin. What’s not to like about that πŸ™‚

irish beauty blogJuly Favourites

The July Favourites that actually made it into the video include:

The Nyx Vivid Brights liquid liner in ‘Vivid Envy’. I did a look with this bad boy here if you fancy seeing it in action.

Colourpop Supershock eyeshadows in both ‘LaLa and ‘Game Face’. I have a Colourpop haul post with these in it here. Bloody love these!

The Scandal Queen Fairydrops mascara. This is new to me, but I had to add it in because I have been loving it! You can pick it up from Cult Beauty here and I will do a full review on it very soon πŸ™‚

And then finally I talk about the Klorane products I have been using and loving. They are a plant based hair care brand. They have been around for years and I had never tried anything from them until now!

If you want to watch the video directly from Youtube just click here, or you can just click on it above.

There you have it, my July Favourites for 2016. What have you been loving lately? Let me know.

If you don’t follow me on social media, firstly eh why? πŸ™‚ and secondly you won’t have seen that I took the chop with my hair this week. I decided to go to Lisa in Zinc Hair and Beauty because I had heard such great things about her. I can attest to that and say I had a really great experience there and I would definitely recommend them! I was happy to find out my hair is in pretty good shape too, so it sparked the idea to talk about my current hair care favourites in a blog post πŸ™‚

hair care favourites beauty blogI am by no means an expert on hair care, these are just the products I am using at the minute and seem to be working for me. I have alot of hair, although the hair itself is quite fine. I also get oily roots really quickly so products can weigh my hair down and make it look flat and greasy. I have to be careful.

First up is my shampoo and conditioner.

joico irelandirish makeup and beauty blogThese are from the Joico Body Luxe Range. I got sent these at Christmas and only got around to using them in the last few weeks. I have really been liking them. These are designed for fullness and volume. I usually wash my hair twice with the shampoo and then add a little conditioner to the ends while finishing off the rest of my shower routine. My hair feels lovely and soft after using them and not at all weighed down.

After washing and to add a bit more conditioning…because I can’t get enough of it πŸ™‚ I’ve been using the Mane n’ Tail Olive Oil Complex Spray Therapy.

mane n tail irelandbeauty blog irelandThis is for shine, detangling and it’s a heat protector, score!

My hair comes out by the bucket load, honestly I shed like a dog, so something like this is great. I apply a layer to my towel dried hair and then use my trusty Wet Brush (I actually have a full review of this here).

the wet brush irelandThis combo seems to give me the less amount of breakage, it doesn’t tug on any knots and I’ve definitely noticed less hair in the brush afterwards.

If I know I am going to be washing my hair early in the morning or early in the day, I love to do a conditioning treatment the night before. I call it a treatment, I literally mean put loads of conditioner into my hair and pin it up when I’m going to bed πŸ™‚

alfaparf irelandmakeup and beauty blogger irelandThe last few months, I have been using the Alfaparf Precious Nature Leave In Spray. I spoke about doing this on my Snapchat a while back. I love giving mini reviews over there. My username is ‘Beautynook’.

It’s a leave in conditioner so it doesn’t make my hair hard and unmoveable when going to sleep. You know when you put a conditioning treatment in and then your hair is like a rock so it’s super uncomfortable? If I’m super fancy, I’ll even apply some, then throw a towel into the microwave for a couple of seconds to heat it up and then put my hair into it, the heat helps the conditioner on it’s way and your hair feels extra awesome then when you wash it! The Precious Nature Leave In Spray is made specifically for coloured hair. It’s also sulphate and paraben free.

The last thing I wanted to mention is this Joico Hair Shaker.

joico hair shakerirish makeup and beauty bloggerThis is a liquid to powder texturising spray. Now I know texturising sprays don’t make your hair feel particularly nice, but if you’re looking for extra volume, they are a fab addition to your hair care collection. I don’t like backcombing my hair if I can help it, it’s so bad for the condition of it and it makes my hair fuzzy. The Hair Shaker is cool because it applies to your hair as a liquid, so you can move your hair freely into your desired style. For me that’s pretty much straight or wavy I’m low maintenance ha, and then the Hair Shaker dries to a powder finish to hold the volume you created in place. I’ve used hair powders in the past and they are just messy and leave your hair looking dull because the powder is white. Charles Worthington do a texturising spray that I love too and you can buy in Boots.

There you have it. All the hair care products I have been truly using and loving over the last couple of months. I would have included dry shampoo in this too, but the one I’m using has been discontinued…devo!

You can buy Joico from Shampoo.ie

Salon places like Xpert Professional sell Alfaparf

And Mane n Tail is available in pharmacies nationwide.
